Christmas Breakfast Room and Mantel

It was hard not to mistake the drywall dust for snow flurries last time I showed you a glimpse of the breakfast room and mantel during my holiday tour here. It was because this was going on. And even though I covered the doorways with plastic, a million dust particles managed to find a way to escape and cause a mess.

Now that the dust has settled, literally, I wanted to share our favorite area in the house, particularly at Christmas time.

About the only thing missing this time of the year is a fire in the main fireplace. About 3 years ago we had a fire…in the fireplace. I came home to a bright orange glow that should not have been there. Scary moments evacuating the family outside in the middle of January and…… praying. Luckily the fire did not spread and was extinguished without a considerable amount of damage to the rest of the house….. but a lot of cleanup. More then the dust particles from last week.
Public Service Announcement- don’t forget to clean your fireplace flue. The buildup in our fireplace is what started a fire.

All this time, the fire from the wood burning stove in the family room keeps this area really toasty. We will get it fixed one day.   Until then, we will continue to enjoy all the other joys that this space provides the family.

Besides, as long as the kids can eat their fruit loops during breakfast and can look at the family tree and realize just how blessed we are, nobody seems to care anyways.

  1. Oh, so I can blame my dust on snow flurries…great idea!…You have such a beautiful area to take in the beauty of Christmas, from the joys and excitement of the kids to that fabulous family tree!…When we moved from South Florida to North Central Florida, our home had 2 fireplaces…and a good thing that the inspector saw major chimney build up…so from then we had our chimney cleaned by a true Chimney Sweeper…He drove a great red truck, dressed in his top coat and top hat and had his dog with him at all times….I wish I had the forethought to take pictures!…Glad you and your family were all safe…how scary!!

  2. That is such a pretty space. I love the way you decorated your tree and mantel. Our neighbors had a small fire in their chimney one morning too. I remember them rushing over and ringing our bell since my husband is a firefighter. Everything ended up being ok, but I don't think they used their fireplace after that again. That is good advice about getting your chimney cleaned!

  3. Laura, We used to have our chimneys cleaned every other year because of the build up. It is basically not a messy job at all-done from the outside with a huge vacuum like thing on a truck. It is very reasonable here- just over $100. depending on how many stories your chimney goes up.

I love your family room and it is beautiful without a fire anyway! Great job and I can see why you love spending time there. xo Diana
