The 1 thing to do before your phone craps out

If there is anything you listen to over here at Duke Manor Farm, please, let it be what I have to say to you today. In fact, I wish it was advice one of you gave to me….and if you did and I didn’t listen, shame on me. So I am in a photo funk…..memories have vanished. Fun times, kid cuteness and breathtaking scenes from Europe that were captured on my phone are no longer. So today, despite my photo sadness I want to tell you the 1 thing to do before your phone craps out.

It’s rather simple advice,  it’s called back up.

So I was going along my own usual way on Sunday morning, drinking my hot tea, chatting with my husband and checking my phone when suddenly, my phone crapped out. After a series of checks, panic, taking the battery out and reinstalling, more panic….nothing.

The 1 thing to do before your phone craps out

I went to the phone store yesterday hoping to fix my nearly year old device and they couldn’t even turn it on.  oh , I ended up walking out with a new phone and $500 expense fee that I did not anticipate, and yes I have insurance that I pay for monthly, but would not have had a phone for 5-7 days. My provider shall remain nameless because this post is about the 1 thing to do before your phone craps out and not how worthless insurance on the devices can be….but it is.

In all fairness and I guess to make myself feel a bit better about this whole thing, I thought I had a sim card in the device and that my photos were backed up on my google account, since they were in the past. I would not have used my phone to capture the gazillion moments that I did if I didn’t think this was the case. But they weren’t.  I am disappointed and sad…. but also realize it’s not the end of the world. But I would be more bummed if I didn’t tell you to back up your photos from your phone TODAY, in fact right after you get done reading this head over to your smartphone device ( if you don’t have one you’re more lucky then you thought) and head to you settings and BACKUP.  Next verify in whatever on line storage you send your photos to and make sure they are there.

I found  some instructions on how to do that if you have an Android device here and  iphone here so we won’t have to commiserate together. FYI- I had an LG and think I am actually going to enjoy the iphone more.

On a brighter note, cause there always is, here’s a picture of the twins and my beautiful niece at the wedding last weekend. If I can scrounge some photos together, I will share more about the beautiful event later this week . You can catch up on what we wore here.

  1. I am so sorry! I had a similar incident happen several years ago while purchasing a new phone. It happened during the transfer of photos from the old to new phone. The memory card in the new phone was defective. I was so upset! At least it was not my fault. Yes, back up everything, elsewhere!!
Grateful for my human memory of the pictures I lost.

  2. Aww… I’m so sorry that happened to you, Laura:( That really stinks! I’m probably going to have that problem soon myself I’m sorry to say… It seems as if I’ve run out of iCloud storage😳 Which is completely dreadful, and I refuse to pay for anymore. I am due to get a new phone, but I just haven’t done it yet, and nor do I want to pay for one right now😁 So I’m gonna hope like crazy that this doesn’t happen before I get my new phone! Beautiful picture of your children and niece!

  3. Let me get this straight: The phone was not even a year old when it crapped out. And you also have to pay insurance for these phones? Wow. I’m kind of glad I haven’t gotten a smart phone and grown dependent on it. I mean, I do wish I could do Instagram. But I see that folks get REALLY dependent on their phones for everything and it’s with them ALWAYS. I’m sorry you lost your photos. I just don’t want to have to worry about any more devices. I’m happy with my shitty $35 phone that I can’t even remember the phone number of after 3 years, and I never ever use and my laptop and my Kindle. Any more would be overload for me. I like to keep my life as simple as possible.

    1. Instead of having to deal w a laptop and kindle, I use one smaller device for everything; my smart phone. Dependant? Maybe so. Fantastic and incredibly handy? Most definitely.

  4. My iphone recently crashed too. I never had backed up any of my photos. I found out about a place called Batteries plus bulbs. They put in a new battery and my phone was fine. I also needed a new charging port, as this is why my phone wouldn’t accept a charge any more. All my photos and contacts were still on my phone and I didn’t lose anything!!!! Hope this may help someone else out too!

  5. Laura, So sorry to read about your phone. My phone crashed a month ago and I lost everything. Apple and other techs could’nt revive it. My question is now I have a Apple iphone and I back everything to Icloud. Is it possible to back up twice to another app, for instance, Google plus my icloud? I say better safe than sorry. Gloria
