Back to school options when your kids wear uniforms

I must admit, back to school shopping for my kids is pretty easy peasy. The fact that they wear uniforms takes out a lot of the headache and expense out of the equation for me when my kids head back to school each year. Not to mention, deciding what to wear each day is pretty much a no brainer. Our big decision is probably the shoe, backpack and lunchbox selection. Which for kids that wear the same looking outfit everyday….tends to be a bigger deal then you would think.

I  put together some back to school options and tips when your kids wear uniforms, since there are still many options out there for us to choose from. I would say I am becoming the expert on khaki shorts , blue skirts and backpacks, which is every mom’s dream…right?   Speaking of the backpacks, I find that Pottery Barn has a great selection and price for backpacks and lunchboxes. It’s always a back to school ritual to search the catalog and pick a favorite out, besides I  know it’s not gonna be long before the sweet little kitty’s are traded in for something else.

In previous years, I have  purchased shirts and skirts from Children’s Place, but this year Target is carrying a new line called Cat & Jack that seems to wash and wear really nicely. I say new because I ever never seen it in the stores or online before this summer.  I  discovered the Skater skirt from this line, which is a perfect alternative to a scooter skirt and it offers built in shorts underneath. To get more wear outside of school, my boys wear khaki cargo shorts rather then the uniform shorts.Back to school options when your kids wear uniforms

To jazz up Lily’s polo shirts, I get them embroidered with the schools mascot or her initials.  The monogram provides just a bit more fancy for her on her shirts.   Another trend that I am all to happy  that has continued this year is boys sporting black athletic socks.  Initially it was not a look that I was crazy about but honestly the black helps to conceal those all too many dirt stains from too much fun at recess.

and….when trying to look cool for a photo.   Is it just my kid, but does the coolness factor dial way up in 5th grade!

I hope it’s an amazing school year for everyone….our teachers included!

  1. OHMYGOSH my son is the same with the sneakers and socks! i knew there would one day come a trend that i didn’t quite understand and that is the one…. so far. more to come i am sure! but you are SO right about hiding stains at least!

  2. Cute – uniforms were definitely easier but my girls are now at schools with no uniform policies and loving it. When we did uniforms, I liked Lands End and JC Penny. I never liked JC Penny for anything other than uniforms…their uniforms wore like iron and washed great. Also, the girls could wear any kind of shoes and socks…we went crazy with socks from Little Mismatch. Have Fun and Have a Great School Year!

  3. Love the info about the uniforms wasn’t to sure about the boys socks but your 5th grader sure does look cute and cool with the glasses and hair. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Hi! Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed talking with you at Haven (at the peel and stick backsplash thingy)! Hope you are doing well!
