How to grow your own peaches

How to grow your own delicious peaches in your yard from a peach tree.

Everyone has their ‘thing’ in life that justifies being able to do the happy dance every once in a while. This summer, my ‘thing’ has been the garden and my peaches.

I planted two little peach trees 3 years ago right smack in the middle of our garden and have been patiently waiting to be able to pick a peach. Yes, it’s the simple things in life that get us the most excited.

So today, I couldn’t contain my excitement, I wanted to share how to grow your own peaches..even if you are not a gardener or have a green thumb.

Peach trees are relatively easy to grow and maintain. When I planted the two peach trees that I got from a sweet pal 3 years ago I just stuck them in the ground in the middle of our garden and crossed my fingers….which is typically how I garden.  Guess what….it worked. The only thing I wish I had done differently was space them further apart. When a peach tree is mature it can grow to 25 feet, so plant them 20 feet apart.

Here are a few other tips on how to grow your own peaches

  • Peaches grow best in the sun…at least 6 hours of it a day will help to ensure the best peaches you can grow.
  • When your tree is young water regularly, once established once or twice a week will do. Add some mulch around the base of your tree to maintain moisture.
  • As with anything else in the garden, make sure your soil conditions are favorable for your peach tree. Honestly, I don’t amend a lot of my Georgia clay soil and I have not had a problem with things growing.

  • Peaches weigh a lot and can put some stress on the limbs, especially on younger trees. So make sure you provide support or you stake appropriately.

  • Peach trees are happy in climates where temperatures during winter reach 45 degrees although temps around 75 degrees provide the best growing conditions for peach trees. The best areas to grow peaches are zones 5 to 9. Duke Manor Farm is in zone 8.
