Decorating a Holiday Mantel Using Red and Black

I’m kicking off today, with Decorating a holiday mantel using red and black. Truth be told if you saw my holiday mantel here and here you would see a theme.  Red and black.  Honestly, I had the color scheme in my brain before I realized that it had been the signature mantel color for the last couple of years. Besides, I always subscribe to the theory if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Well in this case, if you have a million red, black and white glass balls, don’t change it.

Tips for decorating a mantel using red and black

I did do a few things differently this year. First this room is no longer our breakfast room. It’s now our sitting room. So technically it has never seen red and black on the mantel……. So I guess that means it doesn’t count. I will be sharing this room decorated for Christmas later this week. Secondly, instead of hanging the stockings on the fireplace this year, I decided to use a towel rack that we were using outside here. I love the idea of having a stocking holder for the kids stockings. This is the first year breaking my tradition of not hanging them on the mantel.

If you don’t have a coat rack around that you could use, this rack is so easy to make. Basically you need a fence post, some wood to brace the bottom and some hooks. Since I will be bringing this rack back outside after the holidays , I left my post alone but you could also cut the post down to your preferred size.

Garland Tip

Let’s talk about something else I did this year with my garland on the mantel. Each year I tend to wire each individual glass ornament around the garland. This year to make disassembling a breeze it to use floral picks. Basically I wrapped the wire around picks and then inserted the picks with the ornaments around them into the garland. When it’s time to take everything down, I will just remove the picks from the garland. This is a whole lot easier then trying to unravel all the wire and ornaments around the garland.

I sure hope some of my tips will come in handy this season as you decorate your own mantel, especially if you are decorating a holiday mantel using red and black. Next up with more holiday mantel inspiration is Maryann at Domestically Speaking. Enjoy the rest of the tour!
