Magazines or Sheet Music?

I brought this thrifty find home the other day, but I am clearly in a state of confusion.
Not because of how pretty it looks once I cleaned it up and
painted it
or that it’s a perfect size as an accent piece and easy to move around the room
But this, this is what’s got me stumped
I don’t know if  it was intended to hold my magazines or to hold sheet music. I feel guilty sitting there in that chair reading Southern Living when I think I should be standing up playing the flute.
Or perhaps it’s a pulpit for a really short preacher.
Maybe I should be at church!
What do you think- Magazines, Sheet Music or Pulpit?

  1. Oh my goodness, who cares what it was for, but WOW and I in love with it now! Ohhh boy I had better wipe the drool away from my mouth because that is exactly something I would LOVE to find for my house!!! You rock!

  2. I love it, Laura. I think it is an old music stand that they used. There was a similar one in Gramma Clara's house and she was a concert pianist and a music teacher. It is just wonderful!!!! xo Diana

  3. I agree with PJ Harrison—I think it may have been a phone table. Back in the day phone books were much thinner than they are now. Of course it can be whatever you want it to be!

  4. I have a vintage pulpit and it it slanted and much taller. We live in a small town and our phone book would fit in there nicely. Anyway it's charming.

  5. I saw an older table a few days ago that had a little pull out tray where you would place your coaster and drink thereby leaving your lamp, etc in place.

  6. Just a midget who was recovered and rejoiced thanks to your artsy hands.

Now it's thinking it should be a Grand Pulpit but I do think it's to hold books… not magazines, but books. And it comes to my mind the pictures and movies we've seen of past centuries and the Lady is holding the book in her hand, so more or less the size to fill that space. Souther Living wasn't probably edited back then.

We have, in my Country, a revival of the trend with some magazines being printed in a pocket version… maybe they have an eye on your table LOL

  7. I have a beautiful side table that has a pull out shelf that is painted with a waterproof finish. It is to put drinks or food on so one doesn't damage the finished top of the table. Possibly that shelf is missing on your table?
