The Beach Trip of the Year……. the Jellyfish and a Giveaway

It was going to be the trip of the year. Plans were made, route was mapped, and bags were packed. Car was fully loaded, gas tank was full, dogs were brought to Doggie Daycare and we were on our way. Florida Coast here we come! It was the beach trip that my children had been looking forward to for 361 days.

Does this ever happen to you………You checked your list several times, think you have everything you need, just to find out when you get to your final destination ……you don’t.

Now I am not talking about the rad surf boards that my kids were going to be riding the waves on or the  99+ sunscreen that I slather all over the family to prevent that first day sunburn, or those cute Jack Roger sandals and the new sundress that I couldn’t wait to wear with my sun kissed skin. See, I remembered all of that. It was on my list for the trip that I had planned all year.
What I didn’t prepare for was the unexpected. The things that I couldn’t have expected on that long awaited, 361 day anticipated Beach Vacation. Jellyfish. Yes, I said Jellyfish, and boy do they hurt. Did you know that a group of Jellyfish are referred to as a swarm or terror in the water? And that’s exactly what my son thought when he came in contact with them on our first day at the beach.
The picture above is my son before his Jellyfish encounter.
There are three things you should do when you are stung by Jellyfish. The first is to remain calm. This may be difficult if you are seven years old and have never been stung before. The second is to get out of the water. The third is to seek medical attention. Not knowing if this was a minor annoyance or life threatening emergency so we sought out medical care at a local Walgreens Healthcare Clinic. I was happy to see that this clinic was staffed with a knowledgeable physician assistant who treated my son with tenderness and care.  Luckily my son was not embedded with any stingers and they were able to administer the appropriate first aid to him and make him smile. Important outcomes to any mom  or dad.

So now that you know how to treat Jellyfish stings, here are a few things that you may not know about Walgreens Healthcare Clinics.
  • Walgreens Healthcare Clinics are staffed with licensed and board certified Nurse Practitioners who can help you manage and monitor a chronic condition such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma or high cholesterol.

  1. Ouch! I love watching the jelly fish from the deck of a cruise ship…not where I'm swimming! Glad everything turned out okay…I hear they are really painful! Your pics are beautiful! I guess I could use convenient health care when my allergies hit every fall..like now!

  2. Weekends. That would be the time we always seem to need convenient care, when our clinic is closed. Besides, everyone knows kids wait till the weekend to need medical care for that very reason.

  3. Awe, your poor little boy. That's no fun.
I could use healthcare with any of my diabetes questions. So glad it's available!

  4. We've had many jellyfish stings over the years – not fun! The poor kid! I love your photos though and overall it looked like a great time! I use convenient healthcare for minor things and last year when my doctor was out of flu shots, I got mine at a pharmacy.

  5. Your poor baby boy! Did he go back into the water? They say that Jelly fish are usually more prevalent at certain times of the year, so something to always consider when planning a swim at the beach. Good to know about Walgreen's! I didn't know that they may staff a PA! There are so many minor illness and injuries, i.e. poison ivy, bee stings, allergies, etc., and sometimes you just want to get self assurance about the treatment. Visiting Walgreen's would be so convenient. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Walgreens is convenient…their hours and the fact that they are right down the road … right in the neighborhood!!! So glad they were able to help you guys out!!!!!

  7. Glad your son is OK–not a fun thing to happen to a child. Allergy season would be one time–also with five Grandchildren someone always needs to have something checked out…

  8. When could I use convenient healthcare? When my daughter all of a sudden has a horrible earache and cannot hear and it is Saturday of Labor Day weekend. That would be a nice time…. :o)-aimee

  9. This is awesome.
Definetly some people I'll be adding to my prayers… that you study to do a great job is nothing short of awesomeness but to put your heart into it is someting we should support. Thank you for sharing!
Jellyfish are common in our waters so what your Handsome Prince endured wasn't a walk by the beach. Be Brave Little One! Always!!!

  10. Wow…hope your son has recovered! I wish Walgreens had that service when my children were little. I would use it now if we were on vacation in a strange city. In the mean time, I could get my flu shot there! 😉

  11. Your poor son- what an awful way to start a vacation.

I'll tell you when I used Walgreen's Healthcare in an emergency. When I got news last winter in February that my brother was seriously ill I started driving in a snowstorm with my daughter- almost 900 miles. I could not even seen the interstate lines most of the last 100 miles we traveled. We pulled over at almost midnight and I had a horrible UTI. I went to the ONLY 24 hour drugstore (we found out later-withing 80 some miles) and they called my doctor and got my prescription and I was given the meds and out the door in less than an hour. I don't know how I would have made the rest of the trip the next day without their help.
Blessings-Hope you have a wonderful week- xo Diana

  12. Jellyfish stings are the worst!!!…I remember Diana Nyad having to stop her swim from Cuba to Key West due to the horrible Jellyfish….The creation of such facilities as Walgreens staffing PA's or Nurse Practitioners is the greatest thing!…So glad that you found them to help your son with the stings!…

  13. I would use the Walgreens Healthcare Clinic when my kids get a sinus infection or strep throat during the school year. I would love the convenience of this clinic & not having the wait of a doctor's appt.

  14. Convenient healthcare is my middle name! It's definitely our go to for minor cuts and bruises. An occasional pink eye breakout. And absolutely for flu shots!

  22. If there was a Walgreens with this service in my area I would use it for all those little things that really don't need a doctor, like a prescription refill that needs an authorization or the usual colds and allergies that seem to pop up after hours.

  23. Walgreen Clinics would be great for any possible sports injuries that are not serious enough to go to the ER that my children might ever receive during an evening or weekend game.

  24. I totally would use it. I would prefer it to an urgent care location too. I would not, however, use it to replace my regular doctor.

  27. I've heard about so many jellyfish stings this year! Ouch!
I would use them for common illnesses, as well as small accidents. I'd much rather go there than sit around in a packed doctor's office!
