Chandelier Makeover

When I bought this light 12 years ago, I never thought I would be replacing it’s bronze finish with satin nickle….from a can.

But I did……

Nor did I see replacing the off white shades that worked once upon a time with updated burlap shades ….from Hobby Lobby. The shades are a great compliment to this new jute rug that I recently purchased from PB on clearance.

……. and I am glad.

But this makeover didn’t happen overnight. I thought about it (for months) much longer then it took to actually execute the changes. Not sure if it was the cost that I paid for the light (before kids when I had money) or the thought that I really like the light and didn’t want to screw it up and have to buy another……. or have to look at something that looked so wrong.
Very similar to the experiences I had when I decided to paint this and this.

This makeover took 2 cans of spray paint in Satin Nickel, 1 can of glossy white, 5 new burlap shades from Hobby Lobby and a couple of hours.

I would say the $26.00 investment and the months that it took contemplating the decision was well worth it.

Don’t you think?  Yup, that’s what I thought.

So, since I have already done enough thinking about this decision for the both of us, do you have a lamp that needs a little makeover, a couple cans of spray paint and a few hours……..  if so, what are you waiting for?

PS- Don’t forget to see the Readers Choice for 2013 here.

PPS- Many thanks to my buddy Pam and others, who kindly and gently mentioned to me that my candle’s are all upside down. Opps! I could just say, that’s how we do it in the South… or just look like a dork.

Grateful for~

    1. It looks great! what brand of paint did you use? The only Satin Nickel spay paints I can find metallic.

  1. Hi Laura- love your blog and I too am thinking of spray painting 3 chandeleirs we have. Two are black, and one is brass, that I picked up for $2 ! Maybe a funky orange for that one! Just wondering about your white pillars if you intentionally wanted them the other way up? The wax drips are now at the bottom, compared to your before photo with them at the top.

  2. Hi Laura,
Your chandelier turned out great! I've been contemplating doing the same thing to mine. Thanks, it's just the inspiration I needed!

  3. That really does look better! I love the cute burlap shades you used too. I have a very large brass chandelier hanging in my foyer that I would love to repaint, but that means having to hire someone to get it down and then re-hang it. It's in our two story foyer with a giant staircase in the way. So, it just sits for now. I would like to spray it black one day. That would be cheaper than buying a new one since that size would be very expensive.

  4. Laura this came out really good. I like it very much and love the shades. LOL about the candles!! This is something I would probably do.

  5. Definitely worth the wait! It's amazing what paint can do. Such a drastic difference. I do have a light that I'm going to be painting, but it's for the sun room that is not really ready for anything so I'll probably keep it in the basement until I'm ready. It looks great in my head though. Hopefully I'll be able to execute it the way I want.

  6. Laura…this turned out AMAZING…oh the power of paint in your hands is a FABULOUS thing! The transformation is literally incredible! Such an HUGE difference I don't believe it! Applause and APPAWS for you my friend! How is the Donkey…still keeping those ears toasty warm! : ) Hugs…

  7. I would have never guessed that paint job came from a can. The chandelier is gorgeous, and it's a terrific update. I understand your hesitance to paint an investment piece like this, but the results are fabulous. And I personally love your upside down candle covers. You're a trendsetter. 🙂

  8. Laura it's gorgeous!!! I spray painted two chandeliers in our house a couple of years ago and totally understand that inner struggle prior to finally doing it! 🙂 But yours turned out beautifully and I LOVE the shades. So jealous of all you people who have a Hobby Lobby!

  9. Laura,
This makeover looks outstanding! I did mine in the dining room two years ago and it also took me a few months to do it….but it was so worth it. Would love to have you come by and share this thrifty makeover at my party.

    Blessings,
    Linda

  10. Love you chandy makeover. The burlap and brushed nickel look great together. I found those exact same shades at HobLob to use in my kitchen. So excited when I ran across them and for 50% off too!

  11. This is so gorgeous! I LOVE the burlap shades! Genius 🙂 The prior owners of our home left us a very ornate dated looking dining room chandelier, and I may just need to copy yours!

  12. Love how this turned out!! Wondering if you know what brand of spray paint you used. Krylon Rustoleum Valspar or Colormaster? Thanks for the great idea
