Outdoor hanging chandelier using lanterns on a ladder

Creating an outdoor hanging chandelier using lanterns is easier then you think if you have a wooden ladder and a few decorative lanterns. Whether the lanterns are turned on or not, the hanging chandelier provides interest and really becomes the focal point in your space.

Although the outdoor hanging chandelier is not intended to fully light an entire space, it’s perfect if you are trying to create “mood” lighting while dining or entertaining on the patio.

I purchased most of the lanterns at retail stores in the area such as Home Goods, Pier One and Target. Some of the other lanterns were one’s that were already on hand.

Steps for Outdoor Hanging Chandelier using lanterns

Step 1:
Layout the desired position of your lanterns on your ladder.  The length of your ladder will determine the number of lanterns that you need. Mix the position of the lanterns by color, size and texture.

Step 2:
Where on the ceiling do you want the ladder to hang? Once you figure that out where you want your ladder in the space, secure your eye hooks into your ceiling equal distance apart. I also used anchors because of the weight of the ladder and lanterns. Make sure your ladder is secure hanging from the ceiling.

Step 3:
I used jute rope to hang the ladder from the ceiling. I also wrapped the jute around the metal chain on the ceiling.

Step 4:
Level the ladder by adjusting the rope on each side. Once you determine that the ladder is level and secure,  trim the ends of the rope off.

 Step 5:
Tie your lanterns on with the jute. I used varying lengths of rope with each lantern. Place battery operated candles in each lantern.

The mix and collection of using different lanterns, really helps to create a focal point, don’t you think?
