Hanging Spring basket using live plants and flowers

Hanging Spring basket using live plants and flowers

Typically the wreaths that I make for each new season are assembled with faux blooms and greenery, but this Spring I wanted to try something different. I wanted to create a hanging spring basket using live plants and flowers.

I love the look of the fresh plants and greenery, but since I have never had a living wreath before, I’m really curious to see how long the plants that I put in my basket will live. Since I  chose plants that should do well throughout the spring and summer months and the placement gets a fair mix of sun and shade, the wreath should do well. I’ll keep you posted. But for now, let me share how I put this Spring basket together.

What you need

Start with a basket that will give you ample room for your plants and hang on your door.

Plant selection- I chose 4 that would give me height, fullness and cascade over the edge of the basket. For height I used an ornamental grass, for fullness I used Dusty Miller and Ivy and Creeping Jenny to cascade over the edge. The ivy will also do that. For my color I used a Primrose stem and some blooms from an arrangement that I made here

How to assemble your basket

I used the ornamental grass as the center for my basket. Since the container it came in was just the right size, I just placed it in the basket. I divided the dusty miller and creeping jenny and placed them in new containers and put two on each side of the grass. I placed some ivy right in front of the grass. For the blooms, I used the same tubes from this project, filled them with water and stuck them in randomly. I will replace the flowers throughout the season using the same tubes.

I attached a ribbon for an extra pop of color. Don’t forget to water the plants in the basket regularly to keep them from drying out.
