How to revive an old bulletin board

I am not the worlds most natural crafter. I wish when I used mod podge and glued down a map……. it didn’t wrinkle up on me or get burned using my hot glue gun. Or when I applied a vinyl stencil to a bulletin board……it didn’t become a stencil nightmare….like this project started to become.

How to revive an old bulletin board

Start with an old bulletin board
But it does and it did.
See, this weekend when I was minding my non-natural crafting self, I decided to revive this old bulletin board. I used a stencil that I had purchased over the summer for another project that I never did, and ‘thought’ it might work well on the board.

Position your stencil
After I applied two coats of spray paint, I positioned the stencil and was good to go….so I thought.

I peeled back the stencil paper, and positioned the vinyl in place. I was thinking easy peasy at this point, kinda like the excitement I felt the first time when I rode my bicycle down the driveway….. with no hands.
“Wee……. look mom, no hands!!”

The excitement was short lived, until I began to take the top sheet off.  Initially things were coasting right along until my little bicycle ride, became a stencil nightmare.

As gentle and steady as I was, my stencil began to rip and get all twisted up. It kinda felt like the first time I rode my bicycle down a hill and fell……with all the neighbor kids watching.

Correct your mess
It was terrible. How could this be happening. It looked so easy.
Peel off the stencil and stick it to the board.  Just as determined as I was to get back up on my bicycle, I patiently reapplied the stencil, making sure the wheels were round and applying a little of reinforcement where things ripped with some painters tape.

Cover the board with a coat of spray paint
Feeling a bit more confident and hoping that I could finish this project without chucking it into the garbage, I applied one good coat of white spray paint to the top. After a few minutes, I removed the vinyl to reveal a half way decent bicycle……

on an old revived bulletin board.

Are you a natural crafter or suffer the occasional nightmares like me?

Grateful~
For my first bicycle, the orange one with the banana seat!

  1. I must admit I have had issues with Mod Podge. Sometimes it just plain and simple get ugly and then other times no problem. This turned out great Laura. Love the use of the red.

  2. Ha! I had a huge (and I mean huge) craft fail when I decided to paint my kitchen cabinets. It took me months to choose the exact "vintage yellow" for them. Well, in my excitement, I forgot to sand them first and then applied the paint and it looked horrible (like dirty mustard). My husband strolled by me at that moment and looked at my disappointed face and actually said "is it supposed to look like that?". Needless to say, the doors got sanded the next day and I love my green (LOL) cabinets! My moral to the story: Failure is good for us – it makes us stronger!!

  3. That turned out pretty darned good for a craft FAIL….hellloooo….my craft "fails" are like- dump it in the garbage girl-it's never gonna be right! lol I like it and think you did a fantastic job- ox Diana

  4. It looks like you were able to save it..phew! I'm like you. Crafting does not come easy for me, but I really try. Some people are just born crafters. I know my limitations and just try to do the best I can and sometimes I get lucky. I love your bulletin board:)

  5. I'm thinking I probably would have tossed it when the stencil was so bad at staying. You did a beautiful job! I think the colors are perfect and it will be a great reminder. 🙂
