The last… almost finished project from 2018

Remember when I showed you this room sometime around the summer of 2018? It was right before I decided to remove the upper cabinets and move them into the mudroom/breezeway ( depending on where you live and what you call it) . This was all a precursor to installing windows on thiswall since I wanted more light in the  kitchen area.

Well it now looks like this. The last….almost finished project from 2018.

The last... almost finished project from 2018

I tried really hard to get this project finished. But….. the little thing called life, budget and time got in the way. Does that ever happen to you? But hey, I did manage to remove the cabinets, get the wall painted and transform the base cabinets.

These cabinets were installed 16 years ago when this room was designed to be a family room.  I did not need all that upper cabinet space so we repurposed them to be a place for the kids backpacks and shoes. Click here to see how they look now. By the way, in case your wondering I am not missing dusting or filling these shelves with ‘stuff’ one bit. Since we will eventually get windows installed, after I get the air conditioned moved ( the projects we didn’t get done)  I wanted to update the base cabinets to be more functional as a serving area.

Use Paint to easily update a piece

Trying to get the same look as my dining table, I removed all the paint from the top and stripped it down to the bare wood.  I still have a bit of sanding to do and need to decide on a finish. I did apply Tung oil a few weeks ago and it turned out a bit more orangish then I wanted. If you have any good recommendations on what I should use let me know in a comment.

Transform from traditional to modern

The base cabinets got repainted in a color called  Web Gray from Sherwin Williams. Love this color so much I used it on my mantel as well.  Since I was trying to take a bit of the traditional look out of the cabinet I took off the feet and also replaced the knobs for something a bit more sleeker. I was pleasantly surprised that these two small changes could instantly make the cabinet look more modern.

I’ll share in a later post how I stripped the many layers of paint easily and without flying dust all over.

To share a bit more of my vision for this space, I put a rendering together of what a large window would look like on this wall. I will just look out this window….for now.

I hope the new year is going well for all of you. Are you kicking off January with any new projects in your home?

grateful

for new goals, new dreams, new plans

  1. It didn’t take much to change the wall unit to a buffet. I love the new sleeker look and color! I also love that you make the most of your home, instead of going gigantic. I switched my kitchen with my dining room for the light. Now, my kitchen is bathed in light for most of the day and the windows look out on the garden. Much better use of our space.

  2. Loved this. I never would have thought to take them down and then repurpose them. I clicked on the embedded link to see what you did with them and it inspired me. We are downsizing this year and there will be a lot of furniture pieces that won’t be going with me. Yet, I will be looking for every possible storage solution. Your project made me think that I could repurpose at least one of the bookcases that my husband made for the kids when they were younger. Add bins to it and I think they can go with us.

Your photos and home are inspiring.
    Thank you.
