How to repurpose something that makes more sense for your home

As I mentioned here, the clutter in my home is kept to a minimum. I try to keep stuff on display that have meaning and purpose. A couple of months ago I had my husband remove the upper part of a bookcase in our kitchen breakfast area. We are doing some work to this room and honestly I spent more time trying to fill and decorate the shelves, then I did looking at it. So, I made the decision to remove them.

See that red? That’s the original color that I had in this room when we first moved into our home. I will be planking that wall.

The light bulb moment

This is the area that connects my garage to the main part of my house. We call it a breezeway, although we use it as mudroom. This area in my home that despite my countless attempts to make it look nice and orderly, doesn’t. Usually it looks like a pit. Typically I would just say  “it is what it is” but because of a side door entrance for guests, I try to make it look decent. BTW- I cleaned it up for this post.

As he took the uppers off and we were walking out the door to put them in our burn pit, we stopped right about here. The light bulb went off. Soon the upper cabinets were moved and turned into something far more practical for my family. Something that made way more sense. Shoe and backpack cubbies.

I think this idea of reusing the upper shelves achieves that goal. We were able to take the upper cabinets and fit them on each side of the window for a more custom look. I had the bench and basically put it in the middle to create a window seat.  Each kid gets a basket for all of their shoes so there’s not 72 pairs lying right.in.the.middle.of the.floor. The bottom right is for a pet bed and currently being used for the newest member of the family.

How cute is she?

Since I am allergic to cats we will keep her in here till she get’s bigger and then she’ll join the other members of the funny farm outside. Sure hope she enjoys the space…..I know I am. I hope this idea on how to repurpose something that makes more sense for your home, will help inspire you to do the same.
