Summer Living Room

You should know….  I am not a very fancy person…. although once upon a time many years ago and certainly before kids, I may have been or pretended to be. In fact, I am the complete opposite of fancy. I can’t remember the last time I put on a gown ….. my wedding? I have never pressed table or bed linens ….who’s got time for that anyways and I prefer using whatever fork I pick up for my salad and main course…and it’s usually the same one.

I prefer flip flops to heels and a pony tail over makeup….any day.
And when you live in the country, getting dressed up and being “fancy” is more like jeans, t-shirt and your best perfume. Besides, feeding your donkeys in heels would look, well…. just silly.

I bought this furniture for my last home about ~16 years ago.
It worked…there.  It does its best to fit in, in this home  …. trying not to be so formal, you know jeans, t- shirt and ponytail type.

Truth is, if I had to build over, I don’t think I would even consider having a living room or dining room. Unfortunately, we don’t really use these spaces. Besides, I spend more time dusting the space then I do using it….and who’s got time for that anyways.

But it is the first room that you see when you walk in the front door of my home, so I want it to be a sign of welcome and a place of comfort.

A space where you would want to sit and chat with me…….

Just leave your heels at the door. I got a pair of flip flops that you can borrow.

What’s your preference, flip flops or heels….no worries if you choose the later, you are still welcome to come over. In fact, if you want to stay and see the rest of my home, click My Home Tour .

Grateful~
chance to catch up, shop and have lunch with my BFF over the weekend

  1. No heel, unless dressing for the occasion is a requirement, which MIGHT be once a year. No flip-flops, either, though–not enough support for my former dancing feet. Is there a choice in the middle?

  2. Um, I'm a BAREFOOT kind of gal, flip-flops are a dressup for me! LOL! Yeah, heels and me don't get along anymore. Love your living room, it's GORGE! I don't know or care what it's labeled, it's absolutely beeyootiful. I heard you should put your best foot forward (there I go with the feet)so, if the living room is the first place you see, you definitely have put your best out there. ~ Dee

  3. Looks lovely, Laura! I love the ease of being a ponytail girl myself! πŸ˜‰ Love your family portrait too.
    Hope you're doing well.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia πŸ˜‰

  4. Definitely flip flops kind of girl here too. I do love having those nice rooms at the front of the house but we don't use them much either. Your house is beautiful and family friendly…just perfect!!

  5. Your home is absolutely gorgeous, Laura! I would love to pay you a visit…in my flip-flops! I do like a little bling on my flip-flops though πŸ˜‰

  6. Absolutely no heels! I must admit, I think I've spent as much money on a pair of flip flops as I once did for a pair of heels!!! But, living in Texas, it's flip flops 24/7 or no shoes at all!! Love your home! ~~Angela

  7. Your home is gorgeous, Laura! I'm with you, flip flops and no heels! I have a formal home that we furnished over the past 27 years. I love the antiques, but prefer a more casual style now. You have done an amazing job on your home!

  8. Actually, I prefer to be barefooted! When gardening, flip flops just get in the way, slipping this way and that, and heels would never do!
But, I do have a livingroom and a family room, and although the family room gets used the most (that is where the TV is) we do use the living room a great deal and it is the first room you are greeted by…..
Yours is lovely….I like your color scheme…

  9. Amen, sister!!! I am trying to get up the nerve to press "buy" and purchase a more casual dining table to replace the way too formal one we have had since…….well, forever.

  10. your living room is very pretty! I know what you mean about having a room you don't use much. I have the same thing. I do use them at Thanksgiving and Christmas though. But not every year. Only when I host it. I would rather have a bigger kitchen and family room in place of those two rooms. I'm not a fancy person either. I prefer flip flops over heels as well. I think living on a farm like you would be so much fun! It's such a great experience for your kids too.

  11. It's a beautiful space Laura! We rarely ever use our dining room but I love having one but if we had a home that was just open I would want a large farm table and not separate dining and breakfast areas. I had to laugh at the thought of you feeding your donkey in heels!:) I am a flip flop gal all the way. The last time I wore heels was at my wedding and they staid on only for the ceremony and then I put on my wedding flops!:)

  12. What a beautiful space! Casual elegance. I would feel right at home. And, I am a flip flop/barefoot kinda gal!! We turned out living room into a library/piano room, and we sit in there more often now. I would love to tear down the wall between our kitchen and dining room and make it all one big family kitchen…someday…sigh…When my brother built his home, he used our floor plan and tweaked it to do just that. LOVE!! But, for now I am trying to incorporate a few more casual touches in our dining room to make it more relaxed.

  13. This is so beautiful and peaceful. I am ready to come over and have some wine. I love how much light you have coming into the room.

As for the shoes when I lived in Hawaii I was all about the flip flops, though I do love heels, however living in Upstate NY it is usually snow boots.

  14. Flip flop girl here for sure!! I love your decorating style. Everything is so lovely. I SO enjoyed meeting you and hanging out a bit at Haven! You are such a fun energy! XO

  15. Your room is gorgeous, and I am with you on the flip-flops thing, except now I have to wear Fit Flops for extra arch support! I digress. Your living room is really pretty!

  16. Would you mind sharing where your curtains came from in this gorgeous room, which I LOVE! I've now decided to keep my gold sofas that I purchased in a previous life πŸ™‚ Thanks so much!
