Farm Friday….Getting Along

Farm Friday….Getting Along. Full disclosure today’s post is full of cuteness overload.

Welcome to Farm Friday….Getting Along.  A few weeks back the farm expanded by two with the addition of some dwarf rabbits.  One of them was a birthday present for Lily. The other was for my son who also wanted one. Yes…..I’m that mom. We tried for as long as we could to delay getting a bunny….we have ‘had’ rabbits before, and the outcome was not a good one. But of course this was the only thing that she wanted. Okay, off to the pet store to get a bunny bunnies.

The joy that my girl gets being around her animals was certainly worth it, the same for my son. Okay, maybe I’m not such a sucker after all? I should also mention that we picked up two gerbils that day too…for my other son.

Introducing the new kids on the farm

The issue with acquiring new animals around Duke Manor Farm is not where to put them or who will take care of them. The issue is, how will they get along with the other animals, specifically our dogs. So when a new member to the family comes home for the first time we try to get them acclimated as quickly as possible…and hope for the best. My biggest fear in introducing the dogs to the new rabbits was that the dogs would think that the rabbits were new chew toys.

I have to say I had my doubts that this connection would work, but I see it turning into a long term loving relationship.  My only wish is that my kids could get along this well sometimes!

Grateful

to see and feel the joy from my children

    1. NOOOOO. They actually are in a cage most of the day. We try to give them as much time outside when we are out there. They are such poopers even when they are not hopping. Hope you had a good week. Hard to believe with the temps that its fall.

  1. We are on our second bunny. We keep ours in the house. We can not let her run free as she chews cords, not good! She has a condo in our laundry room and is let out for a few hours in the evening. We let her have the run of our bedroom, where all the cords are protected. She uses a liter pan in her condo. I can tell you that bunnies are excellent pets. They do not make noise, well they do make little noises at times, but they are such a joy. They do all have distinct personalities. They will develop ways of “talking” to you. Like when she is hungry she rattles her food bowl. They also get to know your moods, and your tone of voice. I can not say enough about what a great pet they are! Have fun with yours!

      1. We have had two (not at the same time). I got them both right after they were weened. We stick with the mini rex breed. They both required no potty training. We just put a potty pan (the kind made for a cage) and they took right to it! This will sound odd, but they never once pooped on the floor when we let them out. We do put down two thick throws on our bed when she is out in case of a pee incident as both of them seem(ed) to like to jump on the bed where we are. Both of them did have little pee accidents on the throws. Once there is a tiny amount of pee on the throws, they will go to that spot on the throws if they are out several hours away from their potty pan and need to poop. I wash the throws a lot, but I would rather they do that than pee or poop on my floor. It is always a very small amount. It is like a dog I think smelling an old pee spot and going there. Rabbits are not really happy unless they get out daily. They must be allowed out daily for exercise. They will actually misbehave and get depressed if they are not let out. They need to run and jump freely at times, otherwise it like they are in jail. If I skip a night letting Sadie Mae out, I pay for it the next morning! Food bowl and water over turned. Mine even plays dead and scares me. They are extremely smart! I hope this helps some.

  2. Too cute. My rabbit lived to ten, he loved my dogs. A little too much if you know what I mean. Lol. It was one of my cats who would have had him given the chance. Rabbits can be aggressive with other Rabbits of the same sex. I had a gerbil as a child and had to change his cage in the bath because I never handled him. Ahh the things we do.
Im sure your children are all very happy now with their new furbabies x

  3. What can be better than to be a child of yours!!!…..You and your hubby have provided such a most wonderful childhood for your children….they are always so very happy and are surrounded by the love of their parents and the love of their many pets! The experiences they will have growing up on Duke Manor Farm will create memories that they will treasure forever!!
