Revamp your Laundry Room with these 5 changes that any homeowner can do!

I have been meaning to share my laundry room makeover with you for some time but the pile up of clothes never seems to slow down. Luckily I got a few pictures right before we started sheltering in place….good thing because the laundry piles have only gotten worse.

I must say that the changes we have made to our 17 year old laundry room make me happy….although laundry is still not my favorite thing to do. Regardless I can now walk by a room that is more efficient, has a bit more space and is updated with the changes in flooring and wall treatment. Let me share a few things I did and how you can revamp your laundry room with these 5 changes.

Replace Tile

I didn’t intend to leaving you hanging since I showed you the progress of the tile installation here. Although nothing was actually wrong with the green slate tile I had in there, I was ready for something more neutral….and less green. I figured if I was going all in and taking down drywall and moving cabinets, I might as well spend a few dollars and update the look of the floors. I have done a few tile jobs around here and although the installation was a piece of cake, the demo …not so much. You can see my tiling tips here.

Paint and Reconfigure existing cabinetry

Other than a new sink cabinet, all the other cabinets were in the room. I repainted them in a color called Iron Ore from Sherwin Williams. It’s the same color I painted on this wall and cabinet in my kitchen area. Love the color.  To get more light in the space we took the upper cabinets and raised them to the ceiling. What a difference it has made to the space. The cabinets are a  bit higher to get to, so I will use those cabinets for things that I don’t need to get down often. The other upper cabinets that were above the washer and dryer I modified and turned into open shelves.

Here’s the before of the cabinet placement. The changes ( raising above folding counter and removing above the washer and dryer) really open up the space, don’t you think?

Another modification was to take off the bottom doors so that we could easily place the laundry in the baskets. I had this contact paper left over from another project and added to the bottom of the cabinet to make it easy to clean.

Wood plank walls

I love the texture that the wood planks add to the walls.  I didn’t want to clutter up the walls and the horizontal lines give it just enough interest. We used the same wood and process in our guest bath here.

Add an Ironing board cabinet

I think the best addition that I made to the laundry area was a built in ironing board cabinet. When I replaced the traditional door for a barn door it left me some room to be able to put the cabinet in the wall. Prior to the cabinet I hung my iron board on the french door and never liked looking at. This is such a great solution if you have a small space. You will need a wall deep enough where you can insert the cabinet.

Replace laminate for Butcher block counter

No regrets with my choice to use replace the laminate for a butch block counter.   Since I use it primarily to fold clothes I have had no issues. I love the mix of different textures  in the space. The butcher block adds so much warmth to the room. I shared the details on how to install and care for butcher block here.

  1. I looks amazing I just have a hallway from kitchen to the garage, I would love all that room and storage.

  2. So beautiful! I don’t have a separate laundry room, but I have made a lot of updates to my basement laundry area. We bought our home as a new build and since it is just the two of us we didn’t bother finishing the basement but I still wanted a nice area to do laundry. My color scheme is white and grey with fresh green accents. I added chrome racks, accessorized my dryer top with large apothecary jars filled with dryer sheets, dryer balls, etc., and I hung a faux moss bird house overhead with some hummingbirds made from mushrooms perched on it. Also, my husband spray painted dried allium flowers in bright colors, and they are in a large clear mason jar. The folding table was made using new black metal sawhorses, with an eight foot piece of pressed hardboard for a top which I topped with grey/white marble like vinyl adhesive paper. I used a actual yoga mat in bright green as a floor mat in front of my washer and dryer. To disguise my basement windows I put up white paper comb blinds. It’s really fresh looking.
