10 ways to decorate your tree for the holidays

A stroll down Holiday Home Tour lane looking back at the last several years and 10 ways to decorate your tree for the holidays.

Well, it’s that time of the year…..homes decorated for the holiday season.  Before I share the remainder of my holiday home later this week (  on Thursday) I thought it would be fun to take a stroll down memory lane and share a few notables from each year. Although I have no particular favorite look, I do think traditional Christmas colors tug at my heart ( and my family’s)  a bit more than colors that are less traditional.

Showing it’s true colors

The most colorful tree by far was this year’s Pops of Color.  You can see the full tour here.  After a major purge of holiday decorations a couple of years ago, I was determined to use most of the ornaments I had in my holiday bins to create a fun, festive, and colorful way to help celebrate this holiday season. My collection of nutcrackers and some fun colorful paper chains helped to complete the look I had envisioned in our holiday home.

My nod to plaid last year was another tree that I really loved.  I love the simplicity of just using ornaments and lights on the tree. See the tour here. This tree was so beautiful sans any ornaments and almost left it that way until I found a pretty plaid throw blanket.10 ways to decorate your tree for the holidays

The tree above I did in 2018 here started off without ornaments and at the last minute ( along with pressure from the kids to see color on the tree)  I added some color. My hubby made the wooden tree stand that year so I no longer needed to find blankets or throws big enough to fit around the tree.

We love red on our trees around here

This was a 2nd tree that I put up in the kid’s den last year hereThis was a fun tree to put together using red and white ribbon, pom pom, and ornaments that I have collected over the years in red, white, and black.  It was also a happy coincidence that the colors happen to be the University of Georgia’s colors. Go Dawgs!

The year I choose blush…and learned a lesson

This was the year I surprised the kids and decorated the tree before they got home from school. I just loved this tree. My kids….not so much. They were craving color and with the traditional family ornaments.  I even made them sweet blush colored stockings.

Since they didn’t feel like the tree looked like ‘Christmas’, I redecorated the using colors and ornaments that they felt were special. You can read how I learned my lesson here. By the way, the blush and silver ornaments ended up in my bedroom so I got my way too.

You would think I would have known what color to use on the tree especially after we adorned our tree in 2016 in all red and white. Note to self….the kids like red.

10 ways to decorate your tree for the holidays

So looking back at the last 7 years of trees I can conclude a few things. First, we are a house that likes color during the holiday season. Second, talk to kids before I intend on changing the plan for the tree. We know who the bosses are in this house! Third, regardless of the color, size, and ornaments on the tree, make sure that whatever you do brings you and your family joy this holiday season.

I hope this post gives your inspiration and ideas if you haven’t already decorated your tree this year.

Happy Holidays!
