Winters in The House…Home Decor Ideas

I don’t know about you, but I always find that I need to fill the seasonal decor transition between Christmas and Spring with something….anything.  It would actually depress me to take the Christmas stuff down and have nothing around to look at. As if these cold temperatures aren’t depressing enough. So I thought I would share Winters in the house…home decor ideas.

So throughout the house I have decorated with stuff that I have had for years, stuff I made, stuff from my closet, and stuff that I took out of the Christmas bin. All lovely reminders of winter, without spending a dime.
This pine cone wreath that I made ~15 years ago hangs in the kitchen window.

The pine cone garland from the Christmas mantel stuck around and I draped a new scarf around the cow.  This cow is turning into the paperdoll that I always wanted.

Create an instant winter scene inside the house, by filling a glass vase with Epsom salts and sticking in some faux evergreen stems.

I am fortunate to have a few camellia bushes on the property so every couple of days I will cut some new blooms off , put them in water and display around the house.

The camellia is perfect to withstand the cold temperatures and it’s bloom cycle is fall through the spring. Pretty pink blooms for months.

Some other blooms that I am totally enjoying inside the house are these paper whites. The fragrance that the flower gives off is a bit strong, but is so worth it on a dark and dreary winter day. I actually forced these in a glass vase for the first time. The bulbs were planted mid December. I am hoping to get a few more weeks out of them and then I will transplant the bulbs outdoors.

A little ribbon switch on the green wreaths at the front door. The plaid ribbon will take me through Valentines when I take the wreaths down and trade them for something that screams love. I used this ribbon in the house and on the tree during Christmas.

You may have already seen the mantel when I showed you my faux wood firescreen. If not, here’s the tutorial on how to make one.

  1. I love your winter home and that cow with the scarf is the bomb! I do wish we had something that bloomed in the winter here. I'll settle for forcing bulbs and whatever cut flowers I can get from the florist.

  2. Your home looks wonderful with your wintery accents. How lucky you are to have an outdoor shrub blooming! The paperwhites are always a joy to see but I do find their scent overwhelming. I should plant something new to enjoy indoors. Your dining area near the fireplace looks wonderful. I've never seen a FP screen like that before- pretty cool!

  3. Had to laugh at you "dressing up your cow" РI know exactly what you mean, loved paper dolls too! Your winter d̩cor is lovely. Especially like seeing the faux greens in the Epson salts РI use that as faux snow all the time! I so wish I had that "Let it Snow" sign on your mantel!

  4. This is my favorite way to decorate — scrounging and repurposing. All so very pretty and inspiring me to do some winter decorating of my own now that Christmas is FINALLY put away!

  5. Great ideas, especially the pinecones and the greenery in the vase with Epsom salts. Very wintry!! Thanks for your tips. I LOVE your dining room. The fireplace is beautiful! 🙂

  6. I love all of your subtle winter touches around your home! I would love to have more indoor bulbs/plants, that I can transplant in the spring. Thank you so much for sharing them! Great meeting you on this blog hop 🙂

  7. Your winter décor looks so pretty. I'm embarrassed to admit that I took down Christmas and still haven't redecorated. On a positive note, it will be much easier to dust my furniture this weekend.
