3 plants that go the extra mile in the summer heat

3 plants that go the extra mile in the summer heat that you may want to plant in your own garden this summer season

There’s the month over the summer when blooms start to look a bit spent….and hot in our summer landscape.  That time in Northeast Georgia is the end of July and month of August. Today I want to share 3 plants that go the extra mile in the summer heat and will look beautiful in your garden or patio containers.

Lantana

The first and probably my favorite summer plant for tolerating heat is Lantana. Not only does this plant produce masses of delicate blooms, Lantana can tolerate dry drought like conditions. Because it can tolerate dry conditions, I like to use Lantana in planters and landscape where I don’t have a water source. I like to get my Lantana in the ground in May and watch it bloom and spread until the first frost in November. In northeast Georgia, Lantana is an annual, although when we have had mild winters it will come back as a perennial.

Black Eyed Susan

This next favorite gets it’s name for an obvious reason. The dark center surrounded by a daisy like bloom. I have these planted around our backyard pond although Black Eyed Susan would do well as a container plant. What I really love about his plant , besides the fact that it will grow from June till November, is that its seeds will spread and produce more beautiful yellow flowers each year. Every couple of years, I will divide and replant so that it doesn’t take over other plants or flowers in the immediate area.  Black-eyed Susans are good for cut flowers as well.

Begonia

Every year in our front porch planters, I like to change up the color and plants.  This year, I decided to plant Begonias and I am so happy with that choice.

This is an area that gets more shade then sun but Begonias can do well in either conditions. All summer they have provided an abundance of pretty pink blooms despite our hot temperatures.  Begonias perform best in warm environments so you want to plant them after any chance of a Spring frost. When it comes to Begonias water consistently and do not over water, since that could kill them. Occasionally, I will sprinkle some water on them when we are dry around here, but honestly they have been doing well on their own since I planted them in May.

An extra bonus with the Begonia is that there is no need to remove old blooms throughout the growing season. New pretty fresh blooms will just show up. What a beautiful thing plant. Although these are my favorite 3 , here a few other heat loving plants for your summer garden.

Verbena

Zinnia

Blanket Flower

Vinca

Coreopsis

  1. These plants do well in my central NC area also. I also have Homestead Purple Verbena that does well thru frost. It will come back every year. Your garden looks pretty!

      1. I just bought lantana and it’s white! There are a few little yellow petals …. so I don’t know if this is a fluke or just a happy discovery.

Also, I recommend Mexican heather for a little color long into summer. It’s so hardy, like lantana. Some of my begonias bit the dust a week or so ago and I found some pink pentas to fill in and so far so good. I’ve never bought them before so I’m crossing my fingers they last at least a few more weeks.

  2. Your yard is so pretty. We grow lantana here like weeds and they are wonderful all year, begonias not so much. They become a houseplant really quick. Our 118 degree temps don’t work for them.

  3. Lantana is one of the few plants I can’t kill. Seriously. Another survivor that comes back year after year is the Gerbera daisies and yarrow. Yarrow comes in yellow and white. The white is what I have that’s spread everywhere. It has pretty fern-looking greenery. Plus, you can dry it and use it in fall arrangements. (the flower heads, not the greenery) Yay!

When the hubs sees me bringing in new plants, he says “Ah, the new victims”. Snarky guy is lucky I don’t do him in like most of my poor plants, hehe.

    1. Denise, you are too funny! your comment about your hubs gave me such a laugh. I don’t think I have ever grown yarrow. I wonder if it is the weed like flower that grows on the side of the road. Every gerbera daisy i have every had were victims too.

  4. Everything is s pretty and we can grow all three here in the Midwest. I need to try lantana.

I have to ask, is that your house in the background of the lake eye Susan’s? I am in awe of all the windows!

Wax begonias are so pretty and tolerate heat and lack of water (my problem as a plant killer), unlike regular begonias.

Love everything and thank you for the advice!
