4th on the Porch at Sunset Ideas

Although it’s not the 4th yet,  I had a little pre 4th on the porch at sunset with the family the other day. Nothing fancy just some fruit punch, popcorn and margaritas….. for mom and dad. This year we will be celebrating the actual 4th in Tennessee with my sister, but I thought I would catch up with ya’ll today, like you were really sitting here on the porch with me….and the dogs. I have included affiliate links to some of the things on the front porch in case you are interested.

My kids, hubby and let’s not forget the dogs, totally get into being able to have our own little parties on the front porch. It’s our spot. And despite nearing 100 degrees lately, it’s still one of the most favorite places to be. Speaking of 100 degrees, the air conditioner on the first floor crapped out the other day. Service came out yesterday and it looks like we may have to bite the bullet and get a new unit. We nursed it last summer, so it was just a matter of time and money. #lotsofmoney.

Feeling a bit emotional this month. It’s been an interesting flow of emotions and each day it’s different. Happy sad happy sad. I experienced two people dying on me, my father and my friend Susan who was one of my dearest and favorite people on the planet. I have also watched and witnessed a close friend deal with addiction and feeling so utterly hopeless in trying to help. I am that friend that thinks they can fix anything. Physically, mentally and emotionally. But despite my attempts and not wanting to give up, I realize that other then continuing to love them, there is not much else I  can do for them, ultimately they need to help themselves first, which as of this week they are. #thankgod

I mentioned and showed you a peek here that I got some new outdoor cushions for the front porch since the dogs really have made themselves at home on the old ones. I recently discovered this indoor/outdoor dog and cat repellent spray that so far as kept them off the furniture.  Another thing I decided to do, was to go with darker cushions on the chairs from here as it will conceal the clay paw prints should they jump on behind my back. #doggietimeout.

Something else I did recently was bring out this bench that was in the Den to use as a table. Since we entertain out here a lot with food and drink, I am always looking for additional space to put things on. The bench is perfect for this space since it is narrow and doesn’t take up to much room, which a traditional table would. Besides, Rosie Sunshine seems to like it.

Honestly, I have the best luck with my plants on this porch. It’s the perfect condition of filtered light for the Boston  and Asparagus ferns. Once they find ‘their spot’ they require little maintenance besides a good watering every couple of days. I treat them as perennials but you can winterize them as well when the temps get colder.

But before I can think of winter, I am thinking about the 5 weeks remaining to love and enjoy the moments with the kids before they go back to school and our upcoming family trip to the beach.

First things first.

Enjoy the holiday weekend and your 4th of July celebrations!

  2. aaaw, laura, sending you love. i know the feeling- it’s been an emotional one here, too. thank goodness for beautiful outdoor spaces to spend time with the people we love. take care of you, too.

  3. So sorry for your losses, Laura… I will keep you in my prayers. We also walked through addiction with my stepson and it is so heartbreaking– impacts everyone though the addict doesn’t usually realize that. After lots of help and hard work, he is clean and sober for a year and a half now, but it’s a daily choice he makes. Wishing you a relaxing time in Tennesee this weekend… xo Heidi
