Easy Lampshade Upgrade in about 5 minutes

I am finishing up a few loose ends in my office and recently made an easy lampshade upgrade in about 5 minutes to a plain Jane lampshade.  With just a few simple steps and literally about 5 mins, you can create a custom looking lamp shade to coordinate with your space.  This project can also save you money by creating your own custom shade.

Step 1

I started with the same shade that was used in my office previously, a white shade with a grey ribbon bordering the top and bottom.  I carefully removed the ribbon. Skip this step if your shade has nothing on it. Typically they have a tacky adhesive and the ribbon should come right off. If it doesn’t, don’t pull too hard or you could damage your shade.

 Step 2

Use the pieces that you just removed as a guide when cutting your fabric for your new trim. I used some left over material that I had, but you could also use ribbon.

Step 3

Once your pieces are cut you will want to fold both ends together and press with a hot iron. You will need to fold in your ends as well and press.

Step 4

Wrap your trim around the shade. Use a bit of tacky glue to secure the ends around your lamp shade. Make sure the trim is tight around the shade, so you only have to secure the ends with the glue.

There you you have it. An Easy Lampshade Upgrade in about 5 minutes using 2 strips of fabric and less then 5 minutes of your time.

  1. I love simple projects. I had decorator fabric leftover and I loved the print. I did the whole lamp in it and it looks great. And the new glue they have out now is fantastic.

  2. That turned out great. I recently tried to do that with ribbon and it was a total flop because of the very slight shape of the shade made lumps all along the top of the ribbon. Fabric that can be cut with a curve is a much better idea. Why didn't I think of that!

  3. Love fabric you used and how you made it into trim or lamp shade. That fabric looks much like fabric I got at Hobby Lobby, the colors are great, I made a pillow cover out of my fabric but would be pretty to use on a Goodwill drum shade. Been wanting to get more of that fabric anyway so will do that, see what I can make for lamp shade. Your lamp looks great with it's new shade. Happy Fall and Halloween
