How to Style the Holiday Bar Cart

I can’t tell you the last time I got this excited about a piece of furniture. A bar cart. And no….. not for the reasons you may be thinking.

A couple of months ago we had a wild hair and did some room switches around here. The breakfast room switched with the sitting room and the Living Room switched with the Dining Room. Changes that I am so happy to have made. You can see the ‘new’ sitting room and breakfast area here. The result of the change in the new Dining Room meant I had to find something for this one lonely wall. The Bassett Mirror bar cart from Hayneedle filled the void….and perfectly I might add. It’s like a piece of art with it’s gold finish and shelves that are both glass and mirror. And the size fits the awkward slanted wall perfectly. It’s 38 inches wide. And if I ever want to move it, it has wheels , so it’ll be easy.

So naturally the holiday’s felt like the perfect time to learn how to style the holiday bar cart. And although I am total newb at bar cart styling, I think the Dining Room is pretty happy how it turned out. Here’s a few of my tips on how to style the holiday bar cart.

Have fun

Just like any other area in your home, style it your way. There are no hard fast rules on what you should and shouldn’t have on your cart. Being the holiday season, I added some whimsy by placing a paper mache deer that I spray painted silver front and center. I placed a few silver ornaments in some of the glasses as well as adding ornaments to a vase.

Add a variety of refreshments

A bar cart doesn’t have to be all about booze. I added non-alcoholic drinks as well as sparkling water to my cart. Kids and non-drinkers will appreciate not having to search for something to drink in another room. And you will appreciate having everything in one central spot.

Display pretty stuff

Okay, this is not the place to be displaying the mismatched plastic tumblers and coozies stacked up in the kitchen cabinet. Obviously this is an individual choice, since it is your cart and all, but I think your bar cart would look a lot prettier with your best stemware on it. I’m displaying these these fun gold martini glasses in the front of the cart. The pretty flutes in the back were a wedding gift, and they look a whole lot better out in the open, then sitting in the cabinet. Don’t you think?

The Extras

Since the cart has some rails, I added a scarf to the side in complementary colors for a bit of texture. I added a scarf because I couldn’t find a hand towel that matched. Something else that I think is a nice touch on the cart is adding greenery. A stem of eucalyptus in an old patron bottle on top, adds some height as well as interest. It also smells amazing. On the bottom I have a vase with my paper whites. As long as your cart is in an area that gets some sun, you should have no problem putting live plants on it.

If Santa doesn’t think I’ve been naughty this year, I am hoping that he might bring me a new ice bucket like this one or this one. How fun are those!

I received product from Hayneedle in exchange for this review about the bar cart. All opinions….. and the deer are just mine.
