Blue Kitchen Island Reveal and some painting advice

Blue Kitchen Island Reveal and some painting advice when you are painting over your kitchen cabinets.

This post should have come like 8 months ago when I started painting the kitchen island, got two drawers and the base done, but I never finished. For months I looked at my two tone cabinets and pretended they were all the same color. When I photographed the kitchen I would only show you from the backside. I mean who likes being inspired with half painted cabinets!  In my defense I wanted to make sure that I really liked the color that I wanted, which I do. Then it got to cold outside to paint them. Spring rolled around and there was too much pollen in the air. Reason after reason. The final straw was when a friend came over a few weeks ago and asked me why i decided to paint the island two different colors. That’s it….time to finish painting.

The color I used is called Blustery Sky from SW. It’s the perfect blend of blue and gray. I actually considered going a bit more navy, but honestly this island is a workhorse and I don’t know how that would have held up as well. The previous color was a lighter gray and it needed to be repainted, so I chose to go a bit darker. You can see more of the changes that I have and will be making to my kitchen here.

This is the view from the dishwasher looking over to the pantry area. I kept the same cabinet hardware.

Something that I think is an absolute if you are painting your kitchen cabinets is in the prep. Cleaning, sanding and wiping down. I picked up a new to me product that did amazing getting off kitchen grease and gunk from the cabinets. I was called Spray Nine. It is a heavy duty cleaner and degreaser. I also went over the cabinets with TSP ( which I always do) so it helps the paint adhere better.   A few of the cabinets needed sanding so instead of pulling out my palm sander I used this liquid sander deglosser. Does the same thing as the electric sander just no mess or flying dust everywhere. Have you ever used a liquid deglosser?

Ideally someday when it’s in the budget, I would like to change the counter tops to something lighter. Here’s the backside of the kitchen with white cabinets that I painted a few years back. I do like how the stainless brightens up the entire area. We replaced this refrigerator a couple of years ago and love it. Next month I will be replacing my 16 year old dishwasher ( that’s still hanging on) and our oven, which did break after 16 years. I will be replacing them with stainless as well.

  1. Hi Laura…

The cabinets look great! I need to clean and degrease mine and then paint them…can you tell me the order that used the mentioned products? ( I am very new to this DYI stuff )

    Thanks

  2. Beautiful job! I love the color. Our kitchen walls are a very similar color and when it first went up I thought I was in a fish bowl. Took me a couple of months to get used to it. Seeing your gorgeous cabinets makes me glad I painted. Now I think I need a new rug too! I can just see your fab kitchen all decked out with fall color. Mmmmmm

  3. Laura, I love it 💙💙. The color is perfect, not too much. I can’t believe how paint can change things.

I always say, paint is the best thing in decorating.

This why I don’t just comment on what I see on Instagram. I enjoy the story.

I can’t wait to see your room painted.

Enjoy the rest of your day
