The best sweet tea you will drink this summer

I think I’ve been out numbered. I may be the odd man out. I believe I am the only non sweet tea drinker east of the Mississippi…. or at least that’s what it seems. I am the only non sweet tea drinker around Duke Manor Farm. And in all fairness, plug your ears you true Southerners, I like my tea sweet, just not loaded up with real sugar (splenda is my thing). Oh yes I did just say that!

And now that my secret is out, I feel like I might get kicked out of the south later today. But hopefully I can make up for it, by giving you the deets on the best sweet tea you will drink this summer.

The one thing I think we can all agree on whether sweet or unsweetened, nothing screams summer refreshment like a cold glass of iced tea. Here in the south, a glass of ice tea is synonymous with front porch.  And there’s no better time then now with temps around here in the 90’s to enjoy a glass. Here’s a recipe for real southern sweet tea….. tested, and approved with two thumbs up by real southern sweet tea drinkers.

  1. I also like my tea sweet but can’t use sugar. I have found Southern Breeze Sweet Tea bags at my local Harris Teeter. Splenda is already in the tea bag! I couldn’t believe how easy it was to brew up a pitcher of sweet tea to enjoy without the calories of sugar. Let me know if you try them and like them!

  2. I love sweet tea but only use 1/2 cup white sugar to make that much tea. We won’t kick you out of the south for using Splenda. My girlfriends use all sorts of crazy sweetners in their tea and a few drink it unsweetened. I say everything in moderation, including moderation.

  3. Sorry – I think that recipe sounds sickenly sweet. I make my iced tea with Splenda also and use 5 regular size tea bags per half gallon of water and 3/4 cup Splenda. No one will ever know you didn’t use SUGAR if you don’t tell them. If you want it as sweet as sugar – add a full cup of Splenda!

  4. Thanks! Laura! for your Southern Style Iced Tea recipe! I am going to make some this afternoon! We are north of you — in Canada — on the southern shore of Lake Winnipeg! I’m sure we will enjoy your Southern Style Iced Tea on our porch this afternoon! Enjoy your day!

  5. I’m not from the south shhhhhhh to bad but, love iced tea but with a little trivia. Thank you for the quote today it was much needed.

  6. I used to use Splenda in mine, too, but don’t want to use that stuff anymore. I drink mostly water now. I only use one family tea bag and 1/2 cup sugar. Everyone makes it differently. Now, if we could just cool it down a bit out there!

  7. I am so glad to hear that I’m not the only one who dislikes sweet tea. It’s not because I’m a Northerner and believe me, I get so tickled when I hear y’all say how you love sweet tea on the front porch. We just like it very icy and cold with a lemon wedge in it. And a straw, definitely a straw, lipstick you know. Recently I discovered an organic green tea with lemon and spices (as in cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg). I boil it up, add it to one of those huge dispensers with tons of cold water and it keeps in the fridge for several days. I think it’s 2 gallons. No sugar necessary as those subtle spices me you think you are drinking something magical. I have to find the name of the tea. You could tell your friends you got the recipe from your dear sweet Yankee friend up in Chi Town! 😉
