Tips for using plaid in your seasonal decor

My husband and I don’t share the same reaction when we see a good plaid. He see’s his childhood wardrobe and the shirts that his mom forced made him wear. I see a mix of colors and patterns layered onto a couch or chair, and I couldn’t love plaid more then I do especially during the Fall and Winter season. Welcome to this months Cozy Living Series where I am sharing tips for using plaid in your seasonal decor. I’ll have all the links at the end of this post to my other pals who are sharing their cozy home inspiration for the month. You can see last month’s Cinnamon Waffle post here.

Plaids have always been present in my home decor around Duke Manor Farm.  When I think of a cozy home, a great comfy throw or pillow is high on the list.  Chances are, the throw is plaid.  In fact,  I am making the finishing touches on my Fall porch and just made some pillows out of a plaid tablecloth that I picked up at Home Goods.  Yes, don’t underestimate the power of a cute tablecloth….especially one that is plaid. I’ll be sharing the porch in a later post.

Guidelines when using plaid in your home decor

What my hubby doesn’t realize is that a good plaid can add style and color to your decor…regardless your own particular design style. I have a few guidelines I follow when using plaid in a room.

1. Anchor your plaids with neutral colors in your space. Too many plaids can cause some chaos for the eye.

2. If you are using more then one plaid in a space, stick to a common color.

3.  When one pattern is being used, going bold is an option. When two or more patterns are used, subtle is best.

Here’s a few other ways I have used plaid in my home decor.

This was my Fall front porch last year. I mixed the bold blue plaid with a more subtle blue print pillow and the rust color pillows.  I always try to pull a complementary color from the plaid print to pair it all together.

If you are not a big fan of plaid and it haunts you like my hubby, how about adding the pattern in small doses like these cute plaid pumpkins. See more of this copper and plaid fall table here.

This is one of my favorite throws in the house. I love the mustard and gray color combo. It’s a departure from the traditional seasonal colors that you would normally see in plaid patterns.

I found some red and black throws ( at Joann Fabric)  to complement my red holiday theme a few years ago.  I loved the presence of plaid with the solid reds. You can see more of my holiday space here. Speaking of holidays, I hate to get ahead of myself but guess what pattern I am using this year for Christmas?  You got it…..plaid.

Are you haunted by plaid like my husband or are you a fan? If so, what’s your favorite plaid color combo?

  1. Huge fan of plaid! Your comments about your hubby reminded me of my brother when he was single and living on his own. He always got plaid flannel shirts for Christmas. We all thought he loved them – until one day when he showed me all the boxes of plaid flannel shirts stuffed under his bed. Unused and unworn. LOL. I never got him another plaid flannel shirt after that. I love your mustard and gray throw. Pretty much anything mustard color grabs my heart.

  2. Laura, I’m a lover of plaid, too — especially in the Fall and at Christmas! And, my husband loves plaid shirts! Have a great weekend! Blessings!

  3. I am definitely a plaid loving girl. I have added plaid pillows and throws here and there, too this fall.
I have not bought a single pumpkin yet and haven’t done the front porch as it is just too hot. Hopefully fall will arrive before winter!

  4. I couldn’t help but laugh what you wrote about your husband. I love cozy plaid and loved the ideas you shared. What a beautiful front porch and tablescape, too.
