Welcome to my Home Town Tour

Welcome to my Home Town Tour in Pendergrass, Georgia and surrounding areas including Jefferson, Braselton and Athens, Georgia.

Since I live in a very small town, population 481 the only real points of interest are the post office, my church ( which is at the end of my road)  and a booze barn…yes, seriously. Aside from the one booze barn, it’s quiet, beautiful and so serene….that’s why we live here. You can read all about how we found our property on a little dirt road surrounded by pasture fields here.  I took this picture which represents my quiet little road the other morning on the way to school. Isn’t it pretty?

I have decided to spread the scope of this home town tour and show you some points of interest from neighboring cities as well.

City vs Country Living

We love living in a small town. At first I didn’t know if I could last a week not hearing all the noises and traffic that you usually hear in more populated areas. It.Is.So.Quiet.  The biggest change for this once upon a time city dweller is living on a dirt road. I am the kind of gal that always likes to have a clean car……or at least I once did. Our previous home was typical suburban living with everything in walking distance or short car ride away. During the last 20 years we have lived here at  Duke Manor Farm, we have gotten accustomed to quietness and the necessary time it takes to get to where we have to go….and then hurry to get back home. Yes, I am a bona fide homebody and proud of it.

Jefferson, Georgia

Just a few miles east is a ‘larger small town’ called Jefferson,  population  11 K (2017). Jefferson was established in 1803 and named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson. What  puts Jefferson on the map is it is known as the birthplace of anesthesia. It was here that Dr. Crawford Long performed the first painless surgery using ether to induce a unconscious state on March 30,1842. For anyone who has had surgery in the past…we thank you Dr.Long.

Most houses in downtown Jefferson are historic and just darling. Here are a few houses that represent pretty much what you would see around the downtown area.

Maysville, Ga

A beautiful park called Hurricane Shoals is just north in Maysville. I have shared images from the park previously on the blog. It’s a favorite spot for my kids and a bit of a surprise for visitors that come to the area.

The shoals were a sacred holy site to the Creek and Cherokee Indians. There are also many historical structures from the area that have been moved to this site for preservation.

University of Georgia

The University of Georgia campus is  about 35 miles east in Athens Georgia. Go Dawgs! Founded in 1785 it is one of the oldest public universities in the United States. The campus buildings situated on 800 acres has Federal architecture along with beautiful classical and antebellum style, symbolic of the south. The campus is just stunning and worth a visit if you are ever in the Athens area.

Chateau Elan Winery and Resort

Just about 20 miles down the interstate is one of the loveliest spas and resorts around. Chateau Elan is the destination when a more sophisticated bottle of wine from their very own winery ( instead of the local booze barn) or a well needed retreat at the spa is needed. I like to go during the week as the Winery is a popular venue for weddings and parties.

  1. Pendergrass sounds lovely. Very tiny, but also very appealing. We currently live it that suburb that has every convenience, However, now that we are getting to the point of downsizing, moving to a small town is definitely something I would love to do.

  2. I love that I’m not the only one living in a small town with dirt roads and not much excitement. I love the historical references near your home town. I love history, old cabins, and plantation homes. That’s what Georgias all about.

  3. Wait … what? …. no picture of the booze barn! How dare you tease us and not share! Ha! I love seeing where my blogging friend lives! Surrounded by so much beauty!

    🙂 Linda

  4. Laura, what a gorgeous place you live in! Thanks for sharing those beautiful pictures with us!

    Enjoy each day! Blessings!

  5. I’m with Linda. I wanna see the booze barn! LOL. The vineyard is beyond beautiful and I would definitely spend a lot of time there if I lived nearby. My GF went to University of Georgia. Aren’t the B-52s from Athens? Thanks for sharing your area – it looks truly beautiful and peaceful.

  6. You live in such a beautiful area! So peaceful and tranquil. I love the gorgeous homes and interesting places you have nearby, as well!

  7. Thanks for this beautiful tour of your hometown and surrounding area. Our daughter lives in Dallas , GA

  8. I’m just up the road from you and live in the country outside Clemson. I’m a city girl, grew up in Charleston and worked in Houston for a decade. When my hubby announced he wanted to live in the country, I was highly skeptical! But 25+ years later, I cannot imagine living anywhere else. It is so peaceful on our 20 acres, but I can be in civilization in 20 minutes. I understand the constantly dirty car thing completely!
