DIY Mudroom Storage Cabinet

I have been meaning to show you the mudroom storage cabinet that my husband built for our mudroom and the reveal of the space. It turned out amazing! After he built the mudroom storage cabinet, I painted them (Iron Ore) , and then I decided to change the color of the space (Light French Gray) so it delayed a proper reveal. I’ve been known to do that from time to time.

This space is located between our garage and our main living area. Since it’s the main runway through the house for my family and for guests who don’t use the front door, I like it to look neat and tidy but shoes always present a challenge. So my hubby built the cabinet. I’ll share a full tutorial soon but for now, let’s look at the rest of the space.

Use a cabinet (with doors), baskets and hooks to keep things neat and organized in a mudroom space.

Paint Choice for the mudroom storage cabinet

Since I painted the main hallway Light French Gray last year (and really love the color and also have it in our downstairs Den area and hallways) I decided that I wanted to tie the spaces together with the color. I used SW Light French Gray on the cabinet and beadboard and baseboard. I didn’t want to use white on the upper portion of the wall, so I cut the Light French Gray to 80% of the formula. Light but not white, which is what I wanted. I am still debating on whether to paint the doors and trim around it Light French Gray. What do you think?

Since the only closet I have in this space is used as a utility closet, I hung plenty of hooks for the backpacks and jackets. Despite ample places for the backpacks, I still have one kid who insists on laying his backpack on the bench. My favorite Loloi Rugs in Taupe and Charocal help to conceal the dirt, and I just found out the other day when someone forgot to take the dog out, that the rugs can easily be washed.

The mudroom storage cabinet definitely helps to conceal stuff. It instantly creates the neat and tidy look that I like when anyone walks through the door. It’s what’s behind the doors that scares me!

Looks from the past

I thought it would be fun to see how this space has evolved over the year. The hopscotch was a hit when the kids were smaller and easy to remove since it’s applied with tape.

I have since moved those lockers to the guest house where I use them in the entryway.

You can see a few more recent looks here including when I took upper cabinets from my kitchen area and turned them into mudroom cubbies.

  1. This looks great. I used the same paint in my main BR. I really like the color, great for a darker room.
